Christopher Tolkien hated the LOTR movies and vowed never to work with Hollywood again. They had already sold the film rights to The Hobbit by then. This series would have to be something already sold like LOTR or maybe something original like a Shadow of Mordor adaptation.

Lol frick him. Those films were really good and well deserving of the Oscars they won! The Hobbit films were a mixed bunch. I liked the second one a lot but the third was very mediocre and you can tell now stretched thin it was and I think Jackson just wanted to be done with it.
