If you want to take whitetail and also use that same rifle for elk or moose, I would say .300 Win magnum is the starting point.
For black bear, you're probably okay with .300 Win.
For brown bear (or any large, particularly dangerous animal, and I'm not dismissing moose or black bear, but brown bear is different), I would want something in .375 or bigger.
