I’ve seen Labas twice, and I’ve been very impressed. He doesn’t blow you away with the fastball, but his command of all three pitches is rare for an incoming freshman. He spots the fastball on both sides of the plate, can throw the breaking ball for first pitch strikes and commands his changeup very, very well. He was 1-2 to Cabrera Tuesday and threw two changeups just below the zone. Cabrera laid off both. So he threw a 3-2 changeup, in the zone this time, and got Cabrera out in front for a routine ground ball to second.

When you can command that pitch, it makes an 89 mph fastball that much better.

Obviously this class is bigger than most, so you expect more “hits”, but it looks like there are some really good freshman arms in this class.

Labas, Cabrera, Fontenot, Hilliard. And that's without Storz and Vietmeier.
