Get a Nikon D7100. It's a step up from beginners, but has a good autofocus and does well in low light and action. Get a fast lens like the 35mm f1.8 or 28mm 2.8 for the Aurora. You can get that for less than a thousand. It's also weather resistant
Add a telephoto for landscape or wildlife.
Don't get the Nikon D5*** series, it's junk.
