If you have redheads or very fair-skinned kids it's a good idea. Sunscreen wears off pretty quick when they're swimming. Easier just to cover them up.
I get your gist though, some parents do baby their kids over the top.

Better than the opposite. I was shocked on our family vacation to Hawaii by the number of teenaged girls wearing thong bikini.
