Pay for play - I honestly don't even know what this really means. Kids pay to play every sport. The US does fine in those sports. What am I missing?

Why does everyone assume our academy system sucks? I live in Dallas, so maybe it's different elsewhere. FC Dallas has a fully funded Academy that puts out great teams and great talent. Is that not the case inother markets?

Why do I keep hearing we need to let inner city kids play for free? Almost every team in the youth system has scholarships for kids.

Income level affects participation in soccer far more than any other sport.

Since 2007, all MLS teams have started academies, and they are supposed to be free for the players. Last I checked, of the 20-ish MLS academies, only DC United wasn't free, and that might have changed by now. The league has really subsidized it in recent years. FC Dallas has the best academy system in the league right now, and I want all the other teams to copy them.

We've made improvements, but there are still nowhere near enough academies for our elite players to get the free coaching they need. USL teams and teams in the other leagues need to develop their own academies, too.

I think making all tryouts free for any player good enough to make any club team (not just ODP or academy) would be a great start, but good luck getting clubs to accept that. Too many kids don't try out because they can't afford the ridiculous fees. That's a lot of kids that never even get the chance to develop.

It's easy when you're the only country that plays the sport.

Pay to play has a lot to do with it, from what I've read. In Europe, Academies have a lot more incentive to develop players technical skills rather than just win games. The academies are paid by clubs to compensate them for developing a player, if the club enters into a contract with that player.

Also, strategy is piss poor at the youth level. It's getting better, but you still see our youth coaching focused on winning, rather than developing talent. I.E. put a couple athletic players up top and bomb the ball to them and let them score. There's a lot less emphasis on passing the ball around, working it out of the back, because if mistakes are made back there then they will more likely lead to giving up goals, whereas a mistake by a forward is a lot less risky.

Here is an example of where I live in IA. Cost $400 per season(fall and spring) and coaches are just parents that tell the defenders to stand on there own 6 and kick the ball to their kid or as far up the field as you can. Don't let other team score is the goal. And hope your one good kid(who you never want to pass) scores a goal. It was the same when we lived in LA AL and AR. Money goes to USSF. Coaches aren't paid just parents. Fields are city owned in all 4 states. We had to buy are own jerseys ball and equipment. So you have 15 kids on a team $800 per kid. That's $12,000 per year. Up here we went to 2 tournaments for my younger kid we had to pay more for. Luckily one of my kids coaches is head men's coach at a D2 school in town so he is not about results and we work out the back and pass and don't just park in front of goal. But I've seen the same in 4 states. Pay a lot to have patents coach that only want to win(a lot has to do with pressure from clueless parents). So it's park the bus. And who knows where money goes. There are 4 different leagues in town. I've switched between the 1st 3. They are all the same. Even did city league. It was $20(twenty) bucks and you had the same level of coaching Some even better that wasn't affiliated with USSF but it only went up to 12 year olds
