Hurricane update

9TH OCTOBER 2017: 12:00 GMT

The local teams in the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and St. Martin have made great progress in just a short time since Hurricane Irma and Maria passed through these territories. We are working hard along with our partners in the cruising grounds to welcome guests back for the winter sailing season. The BVI and Puerto Rico will re-open December 9, 2017 and St. Martin will re-open February 1, 2018.

We are excited to announce that the British Virgin Islands will receive 130 new boats for a value of $66.5m thanks to the financial strength of our company.

Our destinations in the Bahamas, Belize, Grenada and St. Lucia were unaffected and continue to operate charters normally. In addition, The Moorings will now offer charters from Antigua , booking now for departures starting November 4.

If you have a scheduled charter departure in the BVI and Puerto Rico between now and December 8th 2017, or in St Martin between now and January 31st, please contact our Vacation Planners at (800) 416-0820 or sales@moorings.com (link sends e-mail) for assistance with rearranging your charter if you have not been contacted yet.

Click here (link sends e-mail) to donate to our employee relief fund, which has been set up to help our team members directly affected by the recent Caribbean hurricanes, many of whom have suffered significant losses. As leaders in the yacht charter industry, our goal is to unite sailors everywhere to help these destinations recover as quickly as possible. Thank you for your support of the #CaribbeanComeback. If you wish to help the BVI community directly please consider donating to BVI Relief. bvirelief.org (link sends e-mail).

BVI in General

Appearing via Skype from Virgin Gorda, Sharon Flax-Brutus, director of tourism, estimated the damage from Irma at $3 billion.
"We were poised to have a record year, but we are recovering and taking a phased approach. The BVI is not open for tourism this month. We are continuing our cleanup in terms of repairs to our electric and power grids. Airports and seaports and will be ready to welcome guests on Nov. 1," she said.
The BVI Sailing Regatta is in March 2018, while the Charter Yacht Society is scheduled for Nov. 27.

The destination's annual Lobster Fest will take place Nov. 25 to 28.
The cruise port in Tortola is "okay," according to Flax-Brutus, but the park facility at the pier had damage. "It will be ready in November," she said.
The BVIs luxury properties, including Little Dix Bay and several high-end villas, had major damage and could take up to two years to return "to their former glory," according to the director.
However, some smaller properties, including Treasure Isle and Sebastian's, will be open this winter.
