I wonder if that's really instinct or behavior learned during our coddled lives. An ordinary person's big brain could be a handicap in such a situation, reflecting on lacerations and what the copay will be, desire to avoid further injury, etc. Realizing it's a fight to the death is a hurdle that must be overcome, hopefully before you're shredded to pieces.
