True conservatives believe in limiting the role of government in an individual's life, which is exactly the opposite of a fascist government, where the state is the centerpiece of society and individualism is inconsequential or destructive.
The name calling is a tactic. Convince the population that all conservatives are fascists. Equate them with fascist ideology. Try and get all speech associated with fascism or Nazis banned. If you succeed then you have silenced the opposition.

I used to believe they were just too stupid to realize their blunder. Now I completely agree with this.
