While I think wanting him to be on "the other side" is ridiculous, I do think it's a pretty natural tendency.

If he is on a "side," and there is evidence to support that, then the investigation will discover thus, and we will all find out soon enough. So what I don't understand is that since we don't have near enough information to determine this in the meantime, why is there some incessant need to confidently conclude that he's one the other side?

Anyone who is thinking rationally will know it's an unsupported conclusion regardless, but whether right or wrong, we are going to find out anyways so why not wait until then?

It's one thing to just speculate, but I sense many are uncomfortable with the ambiguity (actually a correlate of conservatism) and wait, and they are doing this to ease that uncomfortablness.

But since it's predominately one sided, and I don't see many who are saying that it's not possible, they be able to use that as a gotcha if the investigation supports it, but it will be easy to use it as a gotcha against them if it doesn't.
