Well, it does work. It's just not a perfect system. If that's your indictment of it, then you will never be happy with anything.
Do you know how many safety features are built into traffic systems in the U.S.? Or how many safety systems are built into modern automobiles sold in this country? Yet fatal accidents happen every single day.
"System doesn't work" or "nothing is perfect."
Again - your chances of being murdered are already low in this country. You can mitigate that more by avoiding areas were murders are likely to occur. If you do end up getting murdered in America, statistically, it will not be at a random mass shooting event where a psycho with a rifle does you in - you're more likely to get struck by lightning.
No, you will be involved in some random street crime gone wrong - or a domestic dispute - and killed with a handgun - and less than a 50% chance it was purchased by the shooter who was subjected to a background check.
So, system is not perfect. But it works an awful lot when you consider how few the nation's ~300 million or so guns kill every year.
