But you have to admit Seinfeld's stand-up was the worst part of the show - and if you watch his Tonight Show's they aren't any type of greatness that would have gotten him the type of fame - Seinfeld the TV show got him.

I mean...

Stuff like - "why do they sell hot dogs in packs of 8 while hot-dog buns are sold in packs of 10? Why is this? Can we get a summit, a conference...to bring the hot-dog people and the bun people together? Can we solve their differences?"

That's not gonna put you in the pantheon but for a hit show.

It was a formula that wasn't working. Which is why they got rid of it. Having Jerry tell one or two jokes in a taped format was much different than seeing him in front of a live audience on Carson or Letterman. And having to tailor the jokes to fit the plot of the show didn't help.

But evidently it will make you one of the most copied comics on tour.

But answer me this. How many times have you heard that joke? How many times has that joke been available (both items on the counter) and everyone in the room has passed on making the joke. I have heard that discussion over 100 times in my life.

Jerry's style is obvious humor. There aren't that many people that can take a fairly obvious observation and make it funny. I think he owns that style, and was the basis of his show.
