There are usually three spawn points where enemies come from in settlement attacks. Once you find all those you can just defend those spots.
Your defense needs to equal your number of settlers for max happiness but around 150 will be enough to win without you having to go back everytime. You could also arm your settlers with good guns and leave some extra power armor for them.

Just got sucked back in. Love this game.
Decided to give Far Harbor a rest for a bit and returned to the Commonwealth and started wandering around. I have over 100 hours in the game but I'm blown away at how much I still haven't discovered. Picked up a "Separated Family" broadcast and started investigating that. So much of these stories just tear me up, a family with two boys, one of them 5, get separated from the mom as the bombs started to fall. They are in a bunker and have no idea if mom is alive or not, 5 year old asking when mama is going to come home, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
