What's funny is so often the same people making hte emotional pleas are the ones that cry "corporations aren't people!" Yet they expect those corporations to make financial decisions based on caring and compassionate emotional personas.

PECs exlusons were a small minority. People hear the horror stories not realizing that they don't apply to employer-based plans.

And further, pre-Obamacare one could still get coverages for everything other than PECs relatively cheap. Say you had a... neck injury... that was excluded from your current policy. BUT... Your policy would still covered you for liver cancer, a broken leg, and the like at actuarial-based (ie, cheap!) rates. That was a reasonable transaction for both participants. Of course, that's gone now, and we're bearing the burden across the board for it.
