Because he had leverage that he used for job security. You folks need to realize that we he hitched our trailer to the wrong horses, we got turned down and had to settle. But no self respecting professional would sign a contract, knowing he is the backup plan without getting some job security to know he wouldn't get canned the second things went wrong.

I swear some of you think you need to be on the coaching search committee but don't have the first clue about contracts.

So you think O would have turned the job down without the buyout? To do what? Go be the D line coach at Cal?

We however live in a nation with 100 better choices. O was going to be lucky to be employed. He had no leverage

That's the problem. We still had time to find a decent hire. Mullen, fedora, and fleck would've all come to lsu in a heartbeat.

O had zero offers and negotiating chips. He had nothing else, except to sit at home.

Read Os account of that last week...he was practally begging for the job. Literally sitting by the phone waiting for the call. When a guy is that desperate, you don't give him a 12m buyout.
