The only people who go on and on about the brotherhood of fraternities are total dorks.

It's a social club. You pay a few grand a semester to hang out with dudes you like and pay for your house, your band parties, sometimes room and board, etc. It's pooling resources for like minded people. It happens during pretty significant coming of age years, so it is natural you'll form some lifelong friendships. But most people probably aren't in touch with 90% of their fraternity within 5 years of leaving.

This. I laugh at all my friends who made fun of me for going Greek yet are willing to spend thousands of dollars with me to ride in parades and be part of marching clubs.
