I am a muff aficionado and have to say Come Back Inn on W. Metairie close to the Kenner line is the best.
Have tasted touristy muff, seafood joint muff and Italian store muff - this is Top Muff.
It's served warm, but ask for the olive salad on the side.
Then apply it liberally after you peel that muff bread away with the cheese stretching out.
It is a hidden gem.
Also super pissed Nor-Joes started a muff fest when theirs is average at best.
For a new twist on muff, try the Frenchaletta at Liuzza's.

I like it on French bread as I just don't care much for muffuletta bread. And I like them warm too.
