Baltimore's monument to the man who wrote the "Star-Spangled Banner" was defaced Tuesday night, with the words "Racist Anthem" scrawled in black.
The phrase was written at the base of the concrete and marble Francis Scott Key monument. Besides the black lettering, the structure was splashed with red and black paint.
On the ground near the monument, words from the third stanza of Key's famous poem were painted in black, according to the Baltimore Sun: "No refuge could save, hireling or slave, from terror of flight, or gloom of grave."

I understand now. It's racist because it says 'slave'.

I am 55 years old, and, until just a few months ago, never knew there was more than one verse to "The Star Spangled Banner."
Sorry, but this, again, is just a bunch of made-up tripe used as an excuse for a group of thugs, sociopaths, and miscreants to cause trouble.

In other words Whitey was fighting to save the lives of black people too.

If they don't want statues of racist, white males that brought colonialism to the Americans where all non whites were victims of genocide then maybe they should remove them.

From an enlightened individual in the OT thread:
quote:
-The Star Spangled Banner lyrics “the hireling ” refers to the British use of Mercenaries (German Hessians) in the American War of Independence
-The Star Spangled Banner lyrics “...and slave” is a direct reference to the British practice of Impressment (kidnapping American seamen and forcing them into service on British man-of war ships). This was a Important cause of the War of 1812
-Francis Scott Key then describes the Star Spangled Banner as a symbol of triumph over all adversity
