Long term lurker, first time commenting.
This is Trump's smartest political move to date. Nobody voted for Trump to enact Paul Ryan's "vision," whatever the hell that is. This was the perfect way to unendorse the clowns in his own party who have been working against him since he announced his candidacy, without unendorsing them, and additionally to provide Harvey relief without getting that slow walked to and alienating a gigantic red state. It was a much needed olive branch to the Democrats to foster a working relationship. People have been bitching about gridlock forever.
Trump was elected to be the President. Not the head of the Republican Party. I'm not sure what conservative principle he compromised by making a compromise. The Democrats now owe Trump one - not the other way around.
