The Google Earth images of that area are a little different - From February of this year when there's less foliage blocking terrain contours. There's some natural drainage feeder tendrils not tar from where they started out. Not too hard to map out a couple high water route possibilities.

Guy being interviewed on katc just said that they got out and started walking once hitting dry ground.
