Yep

S&P had our 2008 defense as #1. Before anyone says we didn't play anyone, S&P takes into account strength of opponent. Our 2008 defense was loaded. better than our 2009/2010 defenses that played in BCS games... I think out of our starting 11, 7 guys got drafted at some point, including all 3 of our linebackers who each had decent NFL careers. Gave up only 14 against Toby Gerhardt & Harbaugh's Stanford, 7 against a BYU team that had a good defense and scored 59 on UCLA, 13 against the 13-0 Utah team that crushed Alabama, 16 against an undefeated Boise State team. We did allow 35 to Oklahoma, who statistically had the best offense in NCAA history that year, but that was well below their season average at home and Stoops himself admitted after the game they got lucky on a couple of their TDs.

2009 and 2010 we dropped to 2nd in defensive S&P.

Ok, so it is possible to field a college defense in Texas. Just seems like the last 2-3 years there's been no D there whatsoever, which is weird for a state with such a proud HS football tradition.
