At the beginning of last year each class (Titan, Warlock, Hunter) had a default sub-class which had it's own tree of perks, super, etc...Eventually they added a third subclass to each class.

You can freely change subclasses depending on what activity you're doing, but they were a bitch to lvl up last year.

I am not very familiar with how it will work this year, so I'm sure someone else can explain in more detail.
