The necessary conclusion of what you are saying is that people who have bad things happen to them deserve it. There is no other logical conclusion. People say "count your blessings" for the opposite reason that you are saying, or at least they should. It's because you actually have very little to do with how good you have it. It isn't some reward or punishment from up high.

So, let's say I've studied for an exam all week long and I pray daily to God that I pass/do well. If I end up passing, I'm going to thank God for watching over me and MY very own studying for helping me.

If a student that literally doesn't open their book and doesn't study at all, but prays to God that they will pass and end up failing. You wouldn't say they deserve to fail since God can only do so much and that they didn't help themselves (not studying)

Doesn't God reward good deeds and preparation by providing us with open doors and opportunities to succeed, if we work hard at it and pray?
