NPR called Houston "Bayou City" this morning. I have never heard it called that before.

It's been called that for at LEAST the last 40 years. That's its official nickname. The city is drained by, and built around 5 bayous.

Houston's on Buffalo Bayou which drains a large area from the west and northwest. Two huge 'catchements' are just west of state route 6 and north of I-10. Not that either will make any difference for all the runoff for all the concrete that is Houston Inside the middle loup.
