What happened had to do with financial payments to cover the tuition costs for the student-athletes in the football program. They offer financial help to kids who can't afford the tuition. Well, Southern University is supposedly involved with this and the books are kept for accounting purposes. This money never made it to the players to pay for their tuition. The money was "pocketed" by the coach that was fired from Capitol and Randall knew about it as they were best friends and did nothing.

Holy crap. This could turn criminal.

Was the money even legit financial aid? Or could it have been deemed for athletics even if the money did make it to the right place?

The technicality is that the players probably had no idea they were playing for free, but the infraction happened and had to be punished

While I agree with you... the player's parents knew, or should have known. Either they knew their child was going to school for free to play football, or they knew they were not getting the assistance checks yet also not geting bills from the school.

How did Southern Lab not realize the tuition bills were not getting paid?

Great point. If donors were giving their money to the foundation to pay for kids tuition to get their education that is one thing, but to have that money donated and then be used to pay for football players to attend school after "reaching out" as the foundation did through Brownfield, that is a different story entirely. That is recruiting. That is incentive financially to attend said school.

BUT, to make matters worse!! the money never makes it's way to the books of the University!! It gets pocketed along the way. What a mess..

If the money did pay for the tuition you still have the problem with recruiting kids to the school in the first place.

What likely happened was that the school saw the discrepancy and began to investigate. They found out that Brownfield was using this "foundation" for recruiting athletes to the school and had the "donors" money siphoned off by he and possibly others hoping that no one would know. How they would figure that is crazy.

They realized they were not getting paid when they did their audit. The books didn't match the enrollment

The parents knowing their kids were going to school for free is fine if the assistance is being paid, but as you said, if they knew that the bills weren't being covered is another thing entirely.

My guess is they had zero idea as the books were being cooked. As another poster said, "The right hand was ignoring the left". They probably had no idea. No one did until the University did an audit. Then they saw the discrepancy. Kind of like me keeping track of my money in my safe. I have kids who sometimes go and pocket a little. I check it and redo the numbers twice a year. Every so often I see some $$$ are missing. I then have to go into inspector mode and find out how or why money is missing as my numbers don't add up.

I catch them too and changed the code. In this case they changed coaches and likely will get some of that money back.
