How do 10 crewmembers become lost in a collision such as this? Is there crew stationed on deck and get thrown overboard as a result of the force from the collision?
In the USS Fitzgerald collision two months ago, there was a ~12' x 17' hole below the waterline. It opened a berthing area that held 35 sailors to the sea. It flooded to it's ~10' high overhead in about 45 seconds. 28 of the 35 were able to escape. They were initially listed as missing. Their bodies were recovered once they made port and were able to get divers into the flooded spaces.
