I was working in Accra, Ghana about 10 years ago and during my stay there I was invited to have dinner at his home with the Chairman of the largest commercial bank in Ghana. (He was black, of course.)

During the dinner he asked me why American blacks preferred being known as "African Americans"?

I told him I had never asked why but I supposed it was a way of honoring their heritage.

He thought about that for a minute then said, "If I should ever emmigrate to the United States I would be very happy to simply be known as an American."

True story....

Most countries don't have the racist history of the US. We live in a country that treated races differently for hundreds of years. Until the last few decades really. A country that divided races by law. Of course he wouldn't understand.
