I think it started due to the filter being very dirty (even though its only about 1-2 months old), and it overheated the unit.
We had quite a bit of work done in house (hardwood floors, and some dry-wall) and it created a shite-ton of dust. I was an idiot and didn't think about the filter.

Damn how much dust do you have in your house? I change my filter on the 1St of every month
