I'd say it's more an attempt to understand than justify. Someone posted a popular Reddit guesstimate of 5 days using Bird speeds and guessed distances and figured 4 days of raven travel time. Using actual real world examples of pigeon travel time I'm suggesting it would take much less time. I do think they needed a better pretext for a Dirty Dozen mission that required surprise dragon rescue, but what happened during the mission isn't as unreasonable or as big of a reach as it first seemed.
