What's the proper way or best way to paint a wooden picnic table?

Just built a picnic table out of treated pine wood.
Looking to paint or stain it near black or black colored.
What's the best way to do it how it will last and won't peel?
Table is outside under an awning and will never be in the sun.

Scorch it with a torch and seal it. Makes a nice look if you like that style.

Sand it, prime it, paint it.

dry it out, prime it and paint. dry it and stain it. the stain will last longer, IMO

What do you mean by dry it out?

Most treated lumber is still wet. Like when you screw a screw in it liquid will come out of the hole. Let it sit in the garage or under the awning with the air hitting it for a bit and it will dry it out, and let the wood absorb the paint/stain better.

Ah yes
Water did come out when I screw bolts in.
How long should it "dry"?

Usually about 3-6 months and it will dry most of the way. At least that's what they told me in a new townhouse I bought where they put a pressure treated pine deck out back. I bought in December and they said wait until late spring to stain or seal it.

I appreciate it. I will definitely do that.

if you have it inside with some air moving across it, should be able to dry it sooner, but pressure treated is soaking wet.

You may want to add some extra bracing to it while it dries out to prevent warping.

Let it dry if the treated wood is still "green".
Stain with Cabot semi-solid stain (Lowes).
I did a swingset and have been impressed with the longevity.
Kind of cross between a stain and an oil based paint. Will allow some of the grain to show through but it is mostly opaque. Available in quite a few colors.
Hope this helps.
