This is how I think of it, but I also realize it won't stop there. People always find something to rage against.

I don't think the majority of the population even notices these statues or assigns any value to them, So this is just one of those "I'm drawing a line in the sand" deals from both sides.

All that said, the monuments represent a rebellion that was quelled so why do we have them again?

To remember the people who volunteered to protect their homes and families from invading armies.

You think Sherman would have cared if you were a union sympathyzer when he rolls through your town killing, burning, and raping everything in front of him?

Based on your statement you would have been content to just watch your family suffer because you didnt want to do anything about it.
