Thank you. This isn't some great mystery.
To your question, becuae monuments are nothing more than politics masquerading as art, always has been. Their message remains intact, just because you don't think it matters (which is absurd, Americans LOVE symbolism and put a high value on it) it does.
Why can't a community where that statue is (say cville) collectively decide to reject those politics and move or take down the statue???

They can.
I just think it sets an awful precedence. And the path it leads down is long, slow, and just full of pettiness. And in the end, it leads nowhere.
