This. I'm not sure what they do if you have something major, but technically you can get cobra retroactively ( as in after you have an issue).
But, wtf op thanks to Obama you can get cheap insurance anytime. There should not be a waiting period and there is no need to get a health check up. Go sign up for the crappiest plan online for like $100/ month. That's all you need and will help in case of something really bad.
