Cats kill off unsanitary rodents, snakes, and other small animal populations. They're also much much easier to take care of and much lower maintenance than dogs.
Here's an interesting tidbit. Killing off cats in the Middle Ages contributed to the spread of the Bubonic Plague as the disease-carrying rats multiplied and spread the disease.

Cats have led to the extinction of 30+ species and are threatening an additional 100+.
This is all thanks to moronic owners who let their domestic cats roam free and the worsening feral cat epidemic.
