NEW YORK — It was bound to happen at some point for the Chuck Blazer All-Stars.

After Romelu Lukaku came up empty for the first time all season thanks to a poorly taken penalty and Christian Benteke continuing to be a useless waste of space, the Chuck Cats needed some heroes behind them.

They got that from a solid, yet unspectacular, midfield and defense led by David Silva and Antonio Valencia. Silva's assist was enough for Freddy Adu's side to edge 99 Problems But A Pitch Ain't One in a defensive grinder at the Cats' Penthouse Stadium.

"Everyone in the world knew Rom was going to hit it left," Adu said. "Even I saw that, and I think I can still play high-level professional football."

Heurelho Gomes, making his second straight start, kept the attack of Harry Kane and Chicharito at bay. Kane couldn't score because it was August, and Hernandez found he had little support up front from an underwhelming midfield.

"Both defenses played well," Gomes said. "It was up to a little bit of magic to pull us through."

That magic came off the boot of Silva, who notched his second assist of the season for the game's only goal. Silva led the way for a well-drilled, defensively sound midfield that featured new signings Nemanja Matic and Aaron Mooy.

With the victory, the Chuck Cats maintain their perfect start to the season atop the TD Fantasy Premier League table.

However, they will head into the international break with some concerns.

"We're still a player or two away from being where we want to be," Adu said. "We hope some value will fall to us in the supplemental draft or we successfully bribe the commissioner. Wait, you're still not recording this interview, are you?"
