Guessing his lawyers were jockeying for him to give only private unsworn testimony. This bypasses that.

He volunteered and was scheduled at which time Grassley and Feinstein had said they'd subpoena him if necessary then late last week the committee announced that he'd just submit written answers to questions. Now they're subpoenaing him after all. Perhaps he was backing out and they came up with the written answers story to buy time on whether they wanted to go through with a subpoena.

It does raise the question again of who the sources are for identifying the other non-campaign staff at the meeting. Manafort had been the most likely source, but based on Kushner's answers yesterday it could be him. He's trying to claim he didn't know what the meeting was for and that he sent an email to have staff rescue him out of the meeting.

Trump Family Thanksgiving may be awkward this year.
