Customers expect the salesman to get nothing, the manager to get nothing, the F&I guy to get nothing and the dealership to get minimum, yet complain they are getting "fricked over."
I've noticed this in all walks of life. I'm only 29, so I cannot speak for the past, but it seems people want the best of both worlds at all times.
When I purchased my vehicle, I followed the Will Cover method of buying. While I was test driving vehicles, were there a couple guys giving to hard a sell? Yes, but that's kind of to be expected. I drove their vehicle to see if I liked it, so I understand sometimes there's going to be a hard sell. I'll politely listened to what they had to offer, and informed them I was still in the beginning phase of test driving.
At the end of the day, I don't see it as one side fricking over the other side, I see it as a meeting of the minds. He technically has more information than I do, because I don't know their individual dealership policy and such, but I did enough research to know about what the car was worth and what people were paying for it. I went to a couple of dealerships, heard what they had to offer, and bought the car I wanted at a price I feel good about. Had I been a more aggressive purchaser would I saved 5 or 10 dollars a month throughout the deal? Maybe, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Generally just going off of word of mouth and not doing a lot of research.
If your salesman is making $50 off the sale, he isn't going to work with you.
