You're close. I picture it as a tug of war over a small pot of money on the table (say 10% of the price) May the better salesman win it. Maybe the car salesman wins it with some and only wins a small portion of it with others - this is why people play this game. Lack of trust. We know any car salesman that says "I promise you, this is the best I can do" is lying the first three times they say it.
