He was using the ridiculous idea of "fricking people over" that's been posted in this thread.

Customers expect the salesman to get nothing, the manager to get nothing, the F&I guy to get nothing and the dealership to get minimum, yet complain they are getting "fricked over."

You're close. I picture it as a tug of war over a small pot of money on the table (say 10% of the price) May the better salesman win it. Maybe the car salesman wins it with some and only wins a small portion of it with others - this is why people play this game. Lack of trust. We know any car salesman that says "I promise you, this is the best I can do" is lying the first three times they say it.

I've noticed this in all walks of life. I'm only 29, so I cannot speak for the past, but it seems people want the best of both worlds at all times.

When I purchased my vehicle, I followed the Will Cover method of buying. While I was test driving vehicles, were there a couple guys giving to hard a sell? Yes, but that's kind of to be expected. I drove their vehicle to see if I liked it, so I understand sometimes there's going to be a hard sell. I'll politely listened to what they had to offer, and informed them I was still in the beginning phase of test driving.

At the end of the day, I don't see it as one side fricking over the other side, I see it as a meeting of the minds. He technically has more information than I do, because I don't know their individual dealership policy and such, but I did enough research to know about what the car was worth and what people were paying for it. I went to a couple of dealerships, heard what they had to offer, and bought the car I wanted at a price I feel good about. Had I been a more aggressive purchaser would I saved 5 or 10 dollars a month throughout the deal? Maybe, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Well to be fair, not everyone understands sales in any shape or form. At all. Car salesmen have to deal with everyone from business executives to kids who barely have a pot to piss in and not enough brain to figure out which side of it actually holds the piss.

Reasonable people know that the dealership has to make money to stay open and they're going to make as much as they can. The issue I have with them is the car salesmen are often not very smart, not very knowledgeable about the product, and have shitty attitudes. The good ones know the product reasonably well, can read the customer reasonably well, and won't feed someone like me a massive pile of bullshite while negotiating.

When I get mad with them is when they start trying to keep me there. I'm going to make you, as the salesmen, make a decision on whether or not it's worth it to you to either take the margin/commission that I've put on the table, or keep the car while my money and I are still on the market elsewhere. It's fricking simple. You think you'll get more for it? Good, go get it. Call me back if you change your mind. Simple as that. That is the single decision that you as a car salesmen ever have to make. fricking make it and let's both move on. I go try to find another car, you go try to find another customer.

As was stated by someone earlier, the majority of customers that walk onto the lot are layovers, and these types of "hardasses" are few and far between. I even know one GM of a Chrysler store that chooses not to deal with them at all. It fricks that "hardass" customer up when he is asked to leave after making his low ball offer.

Roger, you know damn well that a lot of these guys are making a lot more than they should. The GM doesn't need to be making $400k; the Sales Manager doesn't need to be making $250k a year; the finance director doesn't need to make $220k a year; the finance guy doesn't need to be making $140k; the salesman don't need to make over $100k a year. And these are real world numbers from a decent sized dealer in La.

I agree that people need to make money, but a car salesman is not supposed to make more than my kid's pediatrician. But, this is what happens when you're paying people to do whatever it takes to bust the customer's head.

Also, I'd be willing to bet that I can find the legal definition of fraud in more than 95% of car deals.
