i'm not criticizing your statement but i think a lot of LSU fans don't realize this trend is over 10 years old. it's not a trend anymore this is standard in CFB. LSU under Miles was just one of the few hold outs who refused to adapt to modern offensive principles
Utah won a BCS bowl in 2004 with a spread option
Texas won a national title in 2005 with a spread option
schools like Tulane and Northwestern were running spread-option princples in the early 00s
it's 2017. the philosophy is almost 20 years old at this point. there are freshmen at LSU who weren't born when these systems were first implemented. they've literally lived their entire lives with the spread option as a major CFB offensive system

Yes you are right about the timing and is trending was not the perfect wording and there are quite a few teams that have adopted this modern offense the last 10 years and the last 5 even Alabama has.
Using 3, 4 or even 5 WR's is common leaving no room for a fullback and was only explaining why coach O may be doing away with a fullback two back offense.
Miles was fired for refusing to adapt to modern principles and maybe coach O wants to keep his job

Well yeah, football formations have evolved, even in the old days, a good offensive coordinator found ways to make his play calling less predictable. It's misleading to assume that they always used the I-formation. More common was the split back or pro set formation which allowed for more options:
Note that the FB and TB did essentially the same thing. Back then, fullbacks were more valued as runners. They weren't just additional offensive linemen.
And of course there were numerous other formations, including shotgun.
