I also love how they contrasted the reactions of the survivors, their superiors, and those back home. People in England were relieved and greeted the survivors like heroes, and the officers who feared for their soldiers were also visibly happy. However, it was clear the young soldiers weren't sharing in the joy. They had just been driven out of continental Europe and failed in their objective, so it makes sense that they didn't necessarily feel like heroes.
