So who would you of hired? It took LaRussa a decade and numerous playoff appearances before he finally won. And he's always accused of "overmanaging".

You can not seriously be arguing that Mike Matheny was a good choice

Actually, it was either Mike Matheny or Tito Francona.
But BDW went cheap arse, and went with cheap option. When Cardinals were floundering to end the 2011 season, Ownership told Joe Strauss(RIP) that they did not feel paying a manager 5+mil was a smart move(being cheap).
And because of it, they hired MM, and Francona went on to Cleveland.
