People argued he should have focused more on driving in runners with RISP, instead of just getting on base.

That argument still doesn't make sense because Votto has a career .333 batting average and 1.073 OPS with runners in scoring position. The main reason why Votto has low RBI totals is that the guys who have hit in front of him such as Zack Cozart, Drew Stubbs, Billy Hamilton and Jose Peraza have career OBPs barely above .300. It's hard to drive in runs when nobody in front of you is getting on.
