Maybe if you get it from a puppy mill or an amateur 'breeder'. My wife is a veterinarian and we bought two AKC Westies. The breeders, who had AKC and bloodline papers for all of their dogs, would not sell them until they were at least 10 weeks old.

Common doesn't mean right. There are multiple studies that suggest taking a dog from it's mother at that early of an age can have serious negative effects on the dog.
