I disagree with this. I've had different dealers vary significantly on the rate they could get me, and obviously this factors into how much you'll end up paying for the car over the course your loan.
Likewise, they've differed significantly on trade value. Sure they can pretend they are giving you more on trade only to lessen the discount on the car you're buying, but in the end the difference between the trade and purchase price is what matters, not which number is assigned to each.
If financing and trade are going to be part of your deal, there's no reason not to discuss all variables up front.
