Ulysses S. Grant completed the greatest, most audacious, and most stunning campaign of the Civil War by accepting the surrender of the city of Vicksburg. The surrender opened the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in two.

Technically the fall of Port Hudson split the Confederacy in two, but Vicksburg was the key to Port Hudson's demise.

Agreed. But only in the last 20-30 years are historians starting to re-evaluate Grant's reputation and generalship. The man was beloved in his day but his reputation really suffered thanks to Lost Cause historians taking over the scholarship of the Civil War in the 1880s and 1890s.

And my great, great, grandfather was captured at Vicksburg.
Company A, 1st Louisiana Heavy Artillery.
(Actually, he was captured on July 3)

My GG Grandfather commanded a regiment at Vicksburg on top of the hill. Slaughtered the Yankees with guerilla tactics. Slipped away without capture to join Bragg's army of TN at chickamauga. Slaughtered more of the Yankee devils. Chased Sherman from Atlanta to Bentonville NC and with maybe 100 men, forced 800 of Sherman's army to surrender. Word came later Lee surrendered the week before. Forthrightly told his men to stand down and surrendered his sword to Sherman. Sent to Richmond prison, but Sherman was so impressed by his character, how he treated his captives, ordered his release. Gave him a horse, his 40th regiment battle flag and his sword and told him to go home. So odd to see honor practiced by victors and the vanquished. Not sure Grant would have done that, but he acquiesced to Sherman's request.
Battle of Bentonville by NC Press is a good read for those interested.
ETA: Pemberton was a Lily livered fool who cost us the War. No officer under him had any faith in his strategic ability much less respect for his command.

Grant would have and did do things like that. He allowed the Confederates to go home after Appomattox, allowed Lee to keep his sword, and allowed the Confederate soldiers and officers who had horses to keep their horses for the harvest.
Hell...after Vicksburg he paroled all 30,000 prisoners.

Thanks. Didn't know that and what I do know is from family papers and lore told to me by my older relatives, many years ago.
Not much was said about Grant, but plenty about Sherman (great man) and Pemberton (coward)

My great, great, grandfather was paroled, but he went on to join up with a Louisiana Infantry group, and saw action in the Red River Campaign.
I forgot what infantry group it was, I'd have to look in my papers, which I don't have access to right now.
