They are paying him to do a job. Time involved really doesn't matter. If he's delivering accurate work on time, the company already concluded it's worth what they pay him.

Absolutely zero ethical conflict for someone that works remotely on a single task.

Imo it comes down to are they paying him hourly to work 40 hours or are they paying him a salary to do a job? If they are paying him salary I don't see an issue, except for where he adds bugs that's just weak.

Honestly if I was him I'd of started to look for a new job, then once he got hired elsewhere take it to his boss.

Furthermore, his supervisors must be pretty terrible if they don't know that they could of made a program to make a spreadsheet.
