Cops hold more power in their hands than any other person in society, even lawyers and judges. They have the ability to end one's freedom and take one's life at the blink of an eye. If anyone should be held strictly liable for their actions due to the power they yield, it's police. Instead, we have taken the opposite approach and basically absolve cops of almost all wrongdoing when it involves the use of force. If a civilian shot a dog and a ricochet bullet hit and killed a kid said civilian would almost certainly be charged with manslaughter.

Maybe. What I would like to see is pay the cops a whole lot more money since they put their lives on the line every single day. Then as you attract a higher quality individual hold them more accountable.

Before I retired, I made a whole lot more money than most cops, and I did not have to put my life in jeopardy.

Incorrect

Now , depending on where you are you might get charged with possessing a gun, firing a gun, or what have you. But in no jurisdiction would you face murder or manslaughter charges due to a ricochet from a bullet fired in self defense. PERIOD
