In just the next month two movie series will release their third films in Despicable Me and the Planet of the Apes. How to Train Your Dragon is also on the slate of trilogies to finish soon. Assuming these stay as trilogies, how do you think they'll be remembered?

PotA clearly has good critical reception and audiences have responded as well. I think it's way up there as one of the best and most complete trilogies of all time assuming this movie sticks the landing.

Despicable Me is surprisingly better than most might think. I've never seen, and never will see, Minions, but the first two movies focusing on Gru and the girls are actually pretty good and the third movie's first few reviews have it ranked the highest of the bunch.

How to Train Your Dragon will almost certainly be in my top 10 trilogies if the third is as good as the first two.

ETA just googled, looks like this is the third one since the Franco one. Makes sense. I'm leaving the billiology comment though.

I haven't seen a few of those to be fair, but I grew up wanting to be an animator, so I have an affinity for animated films. I also consider the relative goodness of all three movies to be important in what is a favorite "trilogy" so while The Dark Knight is amazing and Batman Begins is really good, I really didn't care much for Dark Knight Rises. That makes the trilogy as a whole slip for me.

I'll go so far as to say Despicable Me has already done damage to animation as a whole with Illumination Pictures. I can never see this studio as making anything in the ballpark of Inside Out and How to Train Your Dragon.

They cut corners at every turn and their animation sucks as a whole. For perspective Illumination's movies cost on average $71 million to make. That pennies compared to Dreamworks ($116 million) and Pixar ($150 million), and keep in mind this is unadjusted for inflation since those two have been making movies since the 90s. Their last two movies were a total rip off of Toy Story but with Pets, and American Idol with animals that does nothing with the concept. So Despicable Me has a big black eye on it due to the studio it created.

So long as 3 is good, then it's a classic. Those shots of flying in the air are dazzling, the score is amazing, and the characters are all likable. I think HtTyD is Dreamworks best effort to date, with the possible exception of the Prince of Egypt.
