Sometimes it's not for attention. I know first hand. I did it (attempt) bc I was ashamed of myself and couldn't get myself to admit to family and friends that I had a big problem. Some do it to save themselves because at the time they know it's best to be hospitalized. It's different for each case but it's not ALWAYS for attention. I see your point though.
